Student Activism at Gettysburg

About the Project

Welcome! My name is Lauren White and I am a junior at Gettysburg College pursuing a double major in Environmental Studies and English. This summer, I am working with the Musselman Library as a Digital Scholarship Summer Senior Fellow. More information about the fellowship can be found here: http://dssf.musselmanlibrary.org/2017

I started my project last summer as a 2016 Digital Scholarship Summer Fellow. This is Why We Fight is an interactive timeline of student-led social justice movements at Gettysburg College. For each event on the timeline, there is a summary of the event itself and an explanation of the its significance.

My interest in this project was sparked by the amount of campus activism Gettysburg (and the larger nation) witnessed in the 2015-2016 school year regarding racism on college campuses and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. I wanted to design a project that not only documented an integral part of college history, but also one that attested to the merit of those students who fought for their own rights or supported those with less privilege than themselves.

I plan to expand the date range of my timeline over the next year, especially through crowdsourcing. If you would like to become involved in the project, there is a form on the website for you to do so. It is my hope that students who interact with the timeline feel solidarity with those who fought before them and are inspired to involve themselves with social justice in the future.
